Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University are coming together to study epilepsy and develop better surgical treatment. The main goal of their research is to see if advanced, subtle signs of epilepsy that can be seen on 7T machines can also be detected on 3T machines.
Most MRIs around the country are 3T machines, and the 7T machines are usually only used for research capabilities due to its high cost. The researchers hope to replicate diagnosis found on 7T machines onto 3T machines in order to save costs and allow for a widespread capabilities.
Surgical treatment for epilepsy is serious and needs the best possible diagnosis before surgery. Epilepsy treatment involves delicate brain surgery within the hippocampus. Currently, most do not opt for surgery due its delicate nature, but perhaps with precise diagnoses this can change.
The researchers are conducting this research with 40 volunteers and will hopefully find results that can better help those with epilepsy.
At Sound Imaging, we offer a number of 3T MRI systems, coils, parts, and accessories. Due to their affordability, 3T MRIs are great options for facilities. We aim to offer the most affordable and high quality MRI products on the market so facilities can keep on providing excellent care.
